Moonlighter 2 Story, Tresna & Characters Explained
The setup
The first game ended with Rynoka’s portals and Will’s shop thriving. Moonlighter 2 opens after an interdimensional authority has arrived to make Rynoka “grow”; the wiki’s summary calls its ruler Moloch, an interdimensional collector, and the residents are pushed out of their own dimension. Will and a ragtag crowd of castaways end up in Tresna, a village that feels bigger and busier than Rynoka, with no coin to their names. Ms. Scratch, the landlady, owns the Moonlighter now and drops Will in the Kalina desert with a backpack and an instruction: do not come back without relics.
The Steam achievements sketch the arc: open the Moonlighter (Back on Track), meet the Endless Vault (Wishing Well), take the portal (Just Like Old Times), clear the first challenge (Novice Merchant) and meet Moloch for the first time (Wrong Home). From there the seven Endless Vault challenges pace the story, with new quests and cutscenes at each threshold. The threshold table shows what each one unlocks.
Tresna
Tresna is the hub: the shop, the Endless Vault cube in the square, the dungeon portal and every vendor. It grows as you reinvest gold, and the developers describe it as a community of castaways and merchants from different dimensions.
| Character | Role |
|---|---|
| Will | The merchant-adventurer you play; mute, backpack, broom |
| Ms. Scratch | Landlady and owner of the Moonlighter; sells shop levels and cosmetics, gives you the robot 34BX03 |
| Moloch | The antagonist, first met after the first Endless Vault challenge |
| Andrei | Blacksmith (returning from the first game) |
| Eris | Witch and alchemist (returning); her riddles hide weapon recipes |
| Babyl | Gunsmith at the Workshop; runs the Gallery Boss Rush |
| Julien | Patch tailor, rescued after 50,000 gold earned; his nightmare is the Aeolia Boss Rush |
| Tomo | Archaeologist and researcher; his radar maps every floor |
| The Countess | Homeware: showcases and furniture |
| Sliver | Backpack upgrades in town; the Greed Colosseum and loot perks in dungeons |
| Nou and Anacard | Material traders met in a Kalina event room |
| K33P3R | Merchant progression |
| Zane Jane, Rival, LandLady, Spark, Mauri, Lita | Vendors and quest givers added by later updates |
Dimensions
Kalina is a desert of beetles and fire; The Gallery is a museum-machine of security bots and lasers where the Curator keeps a captured friend (freeing Masa in the Treasury Halls is the Thief Trophy); Aeolia is a sky realm of witches, wind and rain. Each has a bartender, blacksmith and vendors who appear in event rooms, and each ends in a boss whose defeat drives the next quest. See dungeons and bosses.
What the CEO said the story is building to
In the December 2025 roadmap video, studio director Javier Giménez listed what Early Access would add “without spoiling anything”: new characters in Tresna, new shop mechanics, more combat options and relics, more Endless Vault rewards, and “very critically, seeing what awaits Will and his friends once the vault finally opens, and why Moloch is looking for it”. He added that “being endless is at the heart of what Moonlighter 2 is”, which is the design idea behind the 1.0 Infinite Endless Vault.
Version 1.0
The full release adds the conclusion of Will’s story with new quests and cutscenes, changes to the world after the ending, and then the Infinite Endless Vault as a post-game. Digital Sun describes it only in those terms and we do not summarise the ending here; the wiki’s plot summary stops at the Early Access content.
